Here are a few helpful insights to prepping yourself or your computer before making the journey into The Foundation’s Repair Depot.

Do I need my AppleCare information?

Assuming you purchased AppleCare within the first year of purchasing your Mac, the only time you should need your AppleCare information is when Apple’s database reports that the AppleCare was not registered. Otherwise, the repair person only needs the computer’s serial number, which is usually printed on the underside of the machine. With the serial number, all warranty information can be found.

Should I backup my data before dropping off my computer?

It is always a good idea to backup your important data because The Foundation is not responsible for lost data. It might also be necessary in the troubleshooting or repair process to completely reinstall the operating system. Although you will be notified before we begin this process, having backed up your data beforehand saves time and cost of repair.

Do I need to bring a mouse, keyboard, monitor power cable, adapters or any other equipment?

It is not always necessary to bring this extra equipment because the repair center already has extra for testing purposes.  However, depending on the symptoms of your problem, we may ask you to bring certain equipment.

For example if the computer has a display problem, it’s usually not necessary to bring a power cable, keyboard or mouse. However, if you cannot turn on your computer, the issue may be with your power adapter or power cable so leaving them with the computer will help the troubleshooting process.

If you feel more comfortable dropping off your laptop with a carrying case, feel free. However, keep in mind that the computer will spend the majority of the time stationary while it is being worked on - no off-road adventures for these computers! The more unnecessary things that are left with the computer, the higher the possibility of something getting lost.

These are few a few pieces of advice that should make your next trip to The Foundation’s Repair Depot a breeze.  If you have any other questions about the Repair Depot, please feel free to give us a call at (612) 465-0700.
